US Legal Adviser recognizes ICC importance in Security Council

Yesterday, the US Legal Adviser Mary McLeod of the US Mission to the UN delivered remarks before the Security Council on the topic of the rule of law, and its centrality to the maintenance of international peace and security and the pursuit of global progress.

In her remarks, McLeod referenced the recent participation of the US in the ICC Review Conference:

"The United States was pleased to participate as an observer in the first Review Conference of the International Criminal Court’s Assembly of States Parties. We did so with the clear recognition that international tribunals such as the ICC can be an important part of the effort to prevent and combat crimes that shock the universal conscience."

Engagement with the ICC is also recognized by the US as both a moral and security imperative in its National Security Strategy. For a full AMICC summary of the US participation at the ICC Review Conference click here. Photo Credit: UPI
